Young, Querrey bounce back in doubles after singles losses
PALM SPRINGS, CA - Neither Donald Young nor Sam Querrey had ideal starts to the first professional tournament of 2024.
Both former tennis pros lost in the Play-In round of men’s singles Tuesday afternoon at The Masters, with Young falling to Anderson Scarpa in three games and Querrey falling to Roscoe Bellamy.
Young and Querrey would bounce back in men’s doubles, however.
Querrey pulled out two 12-10 game victories alongside Wes Burrows to move past Zack Taylor and Casey Diamond.
Querrey and Burrows will take on No. 23 seeds Quang Duong and Pesa Teoni in the 2nd round.
In his first pro men’s doubles match, Young and partner Alvaro Terron picked up a 12-10, 11-5 victory over Anderson Scarpa and Brandon French.
The pair’s familiarity with each other from living only 10 minutes apart helped them remain comfortable on court even in key moments.
“When we get to play, we also hang out,” Young said of the partnership. “We’ll go eat together, and that’s what did today, too. We went to Chipotle, just hung out all day and came out here and had fun and it worked out.”
They’ll take on No. 22 seeds Michael Loyd and Patrick Kawka in the second round.
Young also notched a win in mixed doubles alongside Angie Walker, taking down Steve Deakin and Alex Walker 11-9, 11-6.
The 2017 French Open men’s doubles finalist says that the ability to mentally engaged and maintain his energy after the singles loss helped end the day with some wins.
“I was already dialed in with that intensity from singles,” he explained. “I didn’t have to level up or anything, I was already there mentally, so I just carried that into the doubles matches and had two really good partners.”
A matchup with No. 18 seeds Rachel Rohrabacher and Federico Staksrud awaits Young and Walker in the next round.
Play continues Wednesday morning with 2nd round action in the morning and Round of 32 action in the evening.
