# What is Stacking in Pickleball?

Stacking is an advanced doubles positioning strategy where both players on a team line up on the same side of the court before the serve or return, then shift to their preferred positions once the ball is in play. It's used to keep each player on their stronger side — usually their forehand — regardless of which side of the court they're nominally serving or receiving from.

## Why Teams Stack

Most players have a noticeably stronger forehand than backhand. In standard side-by-side positioning, whichever player is on the left covers the middle of the court with their backhand — often the weaker shot. Stacking lets both players keep their forehand toward the middle regardless of the score or which side they're technically serving or receiving from, closing off what would otherwise be an exploitable weakness.

## How Stacking Works

- **Before the serve or return:** Both players position themselves on the same side of the court, even though the rules only require the server or returner to be in the correct service box based on score.
- **After the ball is in play:** Players move to their preferred positions — typically with each player's forehand oriented toward the middle of the court.
- **The server or returner** must still legally be positioned in the correct box at the moment of the serve or return; stacking adjustments happen around that requirement, not in violation of it.

## Full Stack vs. Partial Stack

- **Full stack:** Both players line up on the same side before the serve or return, then split to their preferred positions after the ball is live.
- **Partial (return-side) stack:** Only the returning team stacks; the serving team plays from standard positions.
- **Switching without stacking:** Both players start in standard positions but switch sides mid-rally based on where the ball goes, without pre-positioning before the point starts.

> **Note:** Stacking adds real strategic value, but it also adds complexity and room for confusion. Don't attempt stacking until you and your partner are comfortable with standard positioning and communication — poorly executed stacking, with one player out of position, creates bigger gaps than it closes.
