Clinical performance lifts Waters, Parenteau to women’s doubles gold
Anna Leigh Waters/Catherine Parenteau put together what might go down as the most dominant performance of their partnership in the women’s doubles final, coming away with an 11-0, 11-2, 11-4 victory over No. 2 seeds Anna Bright/Rachel Rohrabacher.
This matchup has produced some of the best women’s doubles matches in the history of the sport, but Waters/Parenteau were simply on a different level on Sunday.
That fact—combined with a lower-than-usual level from Bright/Rohrabacher—resulted in a shocking score line that totaled 33-6 through three games.
Parenteau applauded Waters for yet another dominant performance.
“That girl can do anything on the court,” she said of her partner. “Sometimes she’ll be running down a ball and I won’t even know where she is, and she’ll casually hit a winner. She always brings the energy, she’s so positive, and I just love playing with her.”
In front of a national audience on ESPN2, Waters took a moment to give some advice to any young girls watching.
“Just do what you love,” preached the 18-year-old. “This is something that I love doing, and I’ve been playing since I was ten years old. I used to play rec games with Catherine before I was a professional and thinking that I might be able to partner with her one day, and now here I am, competing next to her.”
In the bronze medal match, No. 3 seeds Tyra Black/Parris Todd defeated No. 4 seeds Meghan Dizon/Etta Tuionetoa by an 11-2, 11-4 score line.
