H. Johnson battles past Alshon for first 2025 gold
Even before playing in (and eventually winning) the men’s singles final, Sunday had already been a pretty good day for Hunter Johnson. His girlfriend, Parris Todd, won her first PPA title since 2022, and they’re both in a commercial that’s going to air during the Super Bowl.
The day has only improved with his 11-7, 11-2 victory over No. 6 seed Christian Alshon to close out Championship Sunday at the Proton Tucson Open.
Johnson put Alshon—who had competed earlier in the mixed doubles and men’s doubles finals—under near constant pressure at baseline with his deep, heavy topspin drives and took advantage of multiple return errors to secure the victory in straight games.
“Christian’s a great player, and he proved it today,” Johnson mentioned. “He was in the running for a Triple Crown, so I just knew that I had to have a good game plan coming into this match, stick to it, and execute. That’s all I could ask for, really.”
As noted earlier, Johnson is in a Super Bowl commercial for Michelob ULTRA alongside Parris Todd, Jaume Martinez Vich, and Emily Cederquist.
“Pickleball is the sport of the future,” he affirmed. “I’m glad we get to be a part of it and that it gets to be showcased on the biggest stage in sports.”
In the bronze medal match, No. 7 seed Dylan Frazier defeated No. 8 seed Jack Sock by an 11-7, 11-13, 11-9 score line.
