17-year-old Goins outlasts Alshon to make first PPA final

When you think about the top teenagers competing on the PPA Tour, there are a few name who usually come to mind, like Anna Leigh Waters, Jorja Johnson, Hayden Patriquin, Gabe Tardio, and CJ Klinger.

But after advancing to the men's singles final in Bristol with an 8-11, 11-7, 11-8 victory over No. 7 seed Christian Alshon, 17-year-old John Lucian Goins has certainly shown that he deserves to be a part of that discussion as well.

The No. 19 seed—who had a big win over No. 3 seed Connor Garnett earlier in the week—showed resilience beyond his years in overcoming a 3-7 deficit in the deciding game to make his first Championship Sunday appearance.

Despite having only started competing on the PPA Tour in March, Goins has already put together an impressive singles resume marked by a win over Ben Johns and a silver medal at the PPA Flower City Challenger earlier this summer.

The 5-star tennis recruit now has his eyes on a gold medal.

“I’m not sure if I’m feeling it yet,” he admitted after his triumphant performance. “I’m still in a little bit of shock that this happened, honestly. I’ve always dreamed of being out here on a court in front of all these people and playing against the best in the sport, so it’s a great feeling to come out on top today. I’m excited for tomorrow.”

Goins will face either No. 14 seed Noe Khlif or No. 15 seed Gabe Joseph on Sunday.
