6:30 p.m. PT: Men's doubles semifinals are officially set
Christian Alshon/Dekel Bar (ATP Pool #1) v. Federico Staksrud/Hayden Patriquin (Erne Pool #2)
Tyson McGuffin/Andrei Daescu (Erne Pool #1) v. JW Johnson/Gabe Tardio (ATP Pool #2)
6:20 p.m. PT: Johnson, Tardio eliminate Johns bros, advance to semifinals
JW Johnson/Gabe Tardio claimed the second semifinal spot from the ATP Pool in men's doubles with an 11-5, 11-6 victory over Ben Johns/Collin Johns in Friday's final match on Humana Championship Court.
It was a win-or-go-home scenario for both teams, since they were each 1-1 through two pool play matches.
Tardio—who had lost to Johnson earlier in the day in mixed doubles—rebounded nicely and played a crafty right side to wreak havoc on the top seeds.
“This morning wasn't my best, but JW and Jorja played great. It was definitely a good warmup for this one," he said.
With this result, the Johns bros join Riley Newman/Jaume Martinez Vich as the two teams that will not make it out of the pool. Dekel Bar/Christian Alshon finished atop the pool with a 3-0 record.
5:35 p.m. PT: Women's doubles semifinals are officially set
Anna Leigh Waters/Catherine Parenteau (ATP Pool #1) v. Jessie Irvine/Mari Humberg (Erne Pool #2)
Anna Bright/Rachel Rohrabacher (Erne Pool #1) v. Jorja Johnson/Lacy Schneemann (ATP Pool #2)
5:00 p.m. PT: Waters, Parenteau sneak past Pisnik, Todd in three games to advance
The ATP Pool in women's doubles was wide open coming into Friday after Jorja Johnson/Lacy Schneemann's upset victory over Anna Leigh Waters/Catherine Parenteau on Thursday, but we now know who's moving on to the semifinals.
Waters/Parenteau bounced back from their previous defeat and took down Tina Pisnik/Parris Todd by an 11-1, 7-11, 11-5 score line.
The key for the top seeds was getting back to having fun on the court.
"We just needed to play our game, be aggressive, and just have fun out there," Parenteau said.
This result puts both teams at 2-1 in pool play.
And earlier in the day, the aforementioned pairing of Johnson/Schneemann had defeated Mary Brascia/Meghan Dizon to improve to 2-1 as well.
Even though there are now three teams at 2-1 in the same pool, only the top two can advance; thus, the tiebreaker is total point differential.
Waters/Parenteau took the top spot with a differential of 24, while Johnson/Schneemann finished in second with a differential of 11. Todd/Pisnik are eliminated with the lowest differential of 5 and join Brascia/Dizon as the two teams that will not make it out of the ATP Pool.
3:40 p.m. PT: Staksrud, Patriquin advance to semifinals with win over Frazier, Tellez
Federico Staksrud/Hayden Patriquin took the second and final semifinal spot in the Erne Pool in men's doubles with an 11-4, 11-6 victory over Dylan Frazier/Pablo Tellez.
Since both teams were 1-1 through their previous pool play matches, Friday's contest was a win-or-go-home scenario: the winner to the semifinals, the loser to elimination.
Staksrud/Patriquin earned the better of the two results, just a day after suffering their first defeat in twelve matches as a partnership.
"I would love to die undefeated with Hayden, but we were gonna lose eventually," Staksrud said. "But at least in this type of tournament with the pool play, we can lose and still try and win the tournament."
Tyson McGuffin/Andrei Daescu, who beat Staksrud/Patriquin on Thursday, improved to 3-0 in San Clemente with a dominant 11-0, 11-0 victory over Matt Wright/James Ignatowich to clinch the top spot in the pool.
3:05 p.m. PT: Mixed doubles semifinals are officially set
Anna Leigh Waters/Ben Johns (ATP Pool #1) v. Anna Bright/Gabe Tardio (Erne Pool #2)
Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson (Erne Pool #1) v. Catherine Parenteau/Christian Alshon (ATP Pool #2)
2:05 p.m. PT: Waters, Johns outduel Parenteau, Alshon to finish atop ATP Pool
Anna Leigh Waters/Ben Johns defeated Catherine Parenteau/Christian Alshon 8-11, 11-5, 11-6 to end pool play with a perfect 3-0 record.
The top seeds dropped the opening game after jumping out to a 5-1 lead, but they rallied to comfortably take Games 2 and 3.
Both teams will advance to the semifinals from this pool, with Waters/Johns finishing in the top spot and Parenteau/Alshon in second after Friday's result.
1:10 p.m. PT: Men's and women's singles semifinals are officially set
Men
Federico Staksrud vs. Connor Garnett
Tyson McGuffin vs. Hunter Johnson
Women
Anna Leigh Waters vs. Mary Brascia
Kaitlyn Christian vs. Parris Todd
1:05 p.m. PT: Johnson claims second spot in ATP Pool, advances to semis
No. 4 Hunter Johnson defeated No. 6 Dylan Frazier by a score of 11-7, 11-8 to finish second in the ATP Pool and advance to the semifinals in the process.
Johnson joins No. 1 Federico Staksrud in the next round.
Staksrud went a perfect 3-0 in men's singles ATP Pool play to finish atop the standings.
12:55 p.m. PT: McGuffin downs Garnett, finishes 3-0 atop Erne Pool
No. 7 Tyson McGuffin solidified his first-place standing atop the Erne Pool with an 11-9, 13-11 victory over No. 3 Connor Garnett.
McGuffin advanced to the men's singles semifinals after finishing the round robin with a perfect 3-0 record.
Garnett was leading 10-6 in the second stanza, before McGuffin battled back to clinch the victory.
"I don't know what I'm doing right now, but I'm playing pretty freaking well. I'm not going to lie. I feel like I'm playing loose, I'm trusting myself. There's a lot of passion there," said McGuffin. "I think the last six months or so, I lost a little passion. I lost a little interest, and I was a little banged up as well. But I had a couple of weeks off to kind of heal and recover, and I feel like a brand new man right now."
Despite the loss, Garnett advanced to the semifinals as well.
11:50 a.m. PT: Christian beats Brascia with dominant performance
No. 5 Kaitlyn Christian clinched first place in the Erne Pool with an emphatic 11-0, 11-2 victory over No. 7 Mary Brascia.
Christian advanced to the women's singles semifinals after finishing the round robin with a perfect 3-0 record.
"I like to bring a lot of firepower. Mary is such a great player, such a nice girl. I knew there were going to be a lot of fans cheering for her today. I tried to give it my all and just put on a great match for everyone," she said. "I played a very clean match. It's sort of been a struggle throughout the season to put together a very clean match, so I'm really thrilled with the way I competed and composed myself today."
Brascia, who finished second in the pool, advanced to the semis as well.
11:15 a.m. PT: Staksrud keeps rolling with singles win over Martinez Vich
No. 1 Federico Staksrud had already locked down top spot in the ATP Pool before handing No. 8 Jaume Martinez Vich an 11-5, 11-7 loss.
Staksrud is riding high heading into the semifinals after stringing together a perfect 3-0 record in men's singles pool play.
Martinez Vich was already eliminated ahead of the match.
"The field is tough. All the players are good. It's really tough to play three events in this kind of tournament when all the champions are out here," said Staksrud. "It feels like every day is a Championship Sunday times three. You've just got to keep stretching, competing, and hydrating because it's always going to be a battle."
The winner of Friday’s contest between Hunter Johnson and Dylan Frazier will advance in the second spot of the ATP Pool.
10:45 a.m. PT: Waters defeats Fahey, finishes atop ATP Pool
No. 1 Anna Leigh Waters clinched first place in the ATP Pool with a 12-10, 11-7 victory over No. 4 Kate Fahey on Humana Championship Court.
Waters advanced to the women's singles semifinals after finishing the round robin with a perfect 3-0 record.
"Especially against Kate, I feel like watching her play other opponents in singles, anytime it's close, she usually comes out on top, so in that first game I was like, 'Anna Leigh, not this time, you're not going to let her do it to you.' I was trying to be even more focused than usual in those tight moments to make sure that I grabbed that first game. I felt like that was really important," she said. "In that second game, even though I was down, I felt a little more confidence because I won that first game. If I was down in the second having lost 12-10 in the first, I probably would've felt a little different, but I think I was able to come back in the second just because I had that first game under my belt."
No. 8 Parris Todd also punched her ticket to the semifinals by finishing second in the ATP Pool with an 11-8, 6-11, 11-3 victory over No. 6 Lacy Schneemann.
