Understanding League Structure in PL
Before creating your first league in Pickleball Leagues (PL), it's important to understand how the league system is structured. PL uses a two-level hierarchy — a League and Sessions within it — and getting this right from the start saves significant rework later.
Leagues vs. Sessions
A League is the top-level container. It holds your league's name, format, player group, and overall configuration. Think of it as the ongoing program — "Tuesday Night Ladder" or "Women's Doubles League."
A Session is a time-bound group of game days within that league — a fall session, a winter session, a spring session, and so on. Each session has its own registration period, schedule, and players.
WarningWhen a new season begins, do NOT create a new league. Add a new session to your existing league instead. Creating a new league each season breaks player history, standings continuity, and pre-registration benefits.
Why this structure matters
Keeping sessions inside one league gives you several advantages:
- Player standings and rankings carry over from session to session
- Existing players can be given an early sign-up window before new players can register
- If the league manager handles registrations manually, existing players can be quickly added to the new session while maintaining their ranking
- Your league URL, branding, and public listing stay consistent for players searching or returning
What to name your league
The league title should reflect the eligibility of the players who can join — not the current season. For example:
- ✅ "Tuesday Night Mixed Doubles Ladder" — describes who can join, works across all seasons
- ❌ "Fall 2025 Ladder League" — tied to a single session, will be misleading in spring

Can I run a one-time event as a league?
Yes. A league can be set up as a single session with a fixed number of game days and then marked complete. You don't have to run an ongoing program to use PL — but the league-and-session structure still applies even for one-off events.
I already created separate leagues for each season — what should I do?
