What Is the I Formation in Pickleball?

The I formation is a doubles serving strategy where the server's partner crouches low and positions close to the centerline, directly in front of the server, rather than standing in a normal side-by-side position β€” the goal is to give the server a clear, unobstructed view of the return while still allowing the partner to move quickly to either side once the point begins.

Why Teams Use the I Formation

In a standard doubles serving formation, the server's partner stands at the kitchen line on their normal side of the court. This can sometimes partially block the server's view of the returner, or create predictable coverage patterns that a skilled returner can exploit. The I formation addresses this by having the non-serving partner crouch low near the centerline, out of the server's sightline, then explode to one side as soon as the serve is hit and the return's direction becomes clear.

How the I Formation Works

  • Before the serve: The server's partner crouches low near the centerline, well inside their normal positional area, keeping out of the server's line of sight to the returner.
  • At the moment of the serve: The server hits the serve as usual from behind the baseline.
  • Immediately after: The crouching partner reads the return's direction and explodes laterally to cover their side of the court, arriving at a normal kitchen-line position as the point develops.
Note

The I formation is a more advanced, less commonly used tactic compared to standard stacking, and it requires good reflexes and communication from the crouching partner, who has less time to get into position than they would in a standard formation. It's most often seen in higher-level competitive and professional doubles play rather than typical recreational games.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the I formation the same as stacking?

They're related but distinct concepts. Stacking is about positioning both players to keep their stronger side (usually the forehand) toward the middle of the court. The I formation is specifically about the server's partner crouching low and out of sight before the serve to avoid obstructing the server's view and to disguise their eventual coverage position.

Yes, it's fully legal. As long as the server is positioned correctly behind the baseline in the proper service position, there are no restrictions on where the server's partner stands before or during the serve.
