Irvine, Alshon into mixed doubles semifinals
LAKEWAY, TX - The last time Jessie Irvine and Christian Alshon took on the sibling duo of Jorja and JW Johnson, things didn’t go their way.
That was in their first tournament together at the Carvana Mesa Arizona Cup, where they lost the encounter 9-11, 5-11.
The tandem wanted to make sure they didn’t suffer the same fate in the Texas capital.
Irvine and Alshon met the No. 3 seeds in the quarterfinals of the Veolia Austin Open and got the job done 11-3, 11-9.
The key to the match this time around was discipline and not going away from the game plan in the tight moments.
“I think I did a really good job of sticking to my strategy, which then helped set Christian up to do his thing,” Irvine explained.
The No. 5 seeds will now take on top seeds Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns in the semifinals.
