Waters secures Triple Crown No. 31 with women’s singles win over Christian
Anna Leigh Waters closed out Championship Sunday at Mission Hills Country Club with a clinical 11-0, 11-6 victory over No. 5 seed Kaitlyn Christian.
Christian came into the contest on a nine-match win streak after capturing her first career PPA title last month in Daytona, but Waters set the tone by earning a Game 1 pickle in just seven minutes.
In the second game, Christian did have more success with her deep approach shots giving her chances to close at the net, but Waters ended the match on a five-point run to claim her third consecutive Triple Crown at the Masters.
The 17-year-old phenom had been pushed to four games in both mixed doubles and women’s doubles earlier in the day, but she played like she had even more energy saved up for singles.
“I somehow find another gear when I’m playing singles at the end of the day,” she noted. “I stop thinking and just play, which is maybe why you see some of my best stuff in that third match. It’s just because I’m not thinking or stressing out anymore.”
Whatever the cause, Waters reaped the benefits in full on Sunday as she continued adding to her record total of Triple Crowns on the PPA Tour.
