Katie Couric shares love of pickleball: 'The more I played, the better I got'

Count award-winning journalist Katie Couric among the many notable public figures with a genuine passion for pickleball.

Couric’s love for America’s fastest-growing sport was recently explored on the Pickleballtv series Celebrity Pickleball, which is hosted by Matt Manasse.

Manasse visited Couric in Southern California to learn more about her love for the game and help her improve her serve with a lesson in fundamentals.

“I started playing about three years ago here in Los Angeles. I met these women. They invited me to play. I was the weak link, but I was hooked,” said Couric. “The more I played, the better I got, and now I play on Long Island, in New York City, and in Los Angeles.”

It doesn’t take long for Couric to showcase her comfort level with a paddle in hand.

She hits Manasse with a joke early in the episode while warming up with some dinks.

“My husband says when I play pickleball is the only time I go into the kitchen,” quipped Couric. “I’ve been cooking with Kelly Rizzo, and we’ve been making stuff that looks really good on Instagram, but we’re not sure about it.”

All kidding aside, Couric appreciates everything about pickleball.

She speaks incredibly high of it.

“First of all, it's a really fun social game. I think you can get good at pickleball really quickly. It's just really, really fun, and by the way, it's good when you get a little older and maybe it's harder to run around the tennis court,” praised Couric. “I'm 68, and I feel like it's just fun to get out and be active.”

The Television Hall of Famer has also turned to pickleball to help raise money for Stand Up To Cancer.

The organization’s mission is to raise awareness and fund research to detect and treat cancers with the aspiration to cure all patients.

“I've certainly been affected by cancer. My husband Jay died of colon cancer. My sister Emily died of pancreatic cancer. I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer,” said Couric. “It's really become an important part of my life to raise money, to raise awareness, and to make sure people get screened.”

Pickleball was actually a welcome distraction during her own cancer battle.

Spending time on the court is good medicine.

“I was lucky. I'm a living example of why early detection is so important. My breast cancer was detected early when it was curable, and that's why people need to get screened for certain cancers,” insisted Couric. “People need to get their colonoscopy or talk to their doctor about other screenings. People really need to take charge of their health.”

This season’s edition of Celebrity Pickleball features eight episodes.

In addition to Couric, Manasse also visits David Dobrik, Marcellus Wiley, Danny Duncan, Trae Young, James Valentine, Drew Brees, and Hannah Stocking.
