Manny Pacquiao embraces pickleball, says boxing instincts shape his game

Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao is bringing his competitive spirit to pickleball.

Pacquiao recently shared a training video that highlighted his growing passion for the sport, while also revealing that his boxing background still plays a major role in how he performs on the court.

The clip quickly caught attention as Pacquiao continues to promote the newly launched Maharlika Pilipinas Pickleball Tour (MPPT).

Despite trading in gloves for a paddle, Pacquiao admitted that muscle memory from decades in the ring hasn’t gone anywhere.

"My natural reflexes still dictate boxing combinations to me," he joked. "At the moment of striking, my mind still orders me to execute a classic jab, jab, hook."

Pacquiao’s involvement in pickleball comes at a pivotal moment for the sport in the Philippines, where participation and interest are rapidly increasing. Through the MPPT, he aims to elevate the game and create meaningful opportunities for athletes nationwide.

During the league’s introduction earlier this year, Pacquiao emphasized the deeper purpose behind the initiative.

"It's always been my mission to promote sports and give our athletes a platform to showcase their talents and bring pride and honour to their cities and provinces," he said. "I know it's a relatively new sport in the Philippines, but it's exciting and easy to learn."

The MPPT will feature eight regional teams competing in men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles formats. The league is designed to grow the sport’s footprint while giving local players a professional stage.

With Pacquiao leading the charge, pickleball is gaining unprecedented visibility across the country. His influence, combined with the accessibility of the sport, is expected to accelerate its growth in the coming years.
