Michelle McMahon reflects on acting experience in 'A House of Dynamite'

Emmy-winning sportscaster Michelle McMahon is widely known for her work on Pickleballtv, but she recently showcased her acting chops as well.

McMahon plays a reporter in a scene of the popular Netflix movie “A House of Dynamite” starring Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, and Tracy Letts.

During her appearance on camera, McMahon follows Elba, who plays the President of the United States, and a group of security guards, to ask him a few burning questions.

In short, the role closely resembled her day job.

“I have an acting manager, Karen Riposo, and she pitched me to the casting directors,” explained McMahon. “They originally pitched a guy for that role, and apparently they needed a feisty redhead instead.”

Needless to say, it was a memorable experience.

And it provided unique insight into the movie business as well.

“We filmed it about a year ago. I flew out to New York and we filmed at the Prudential Center. It was so cool because I had my own trailer and they picked out all these outfits for me. I got my hair and makeup done, the whole nine yards,” she recalled. “It was eight hours of filming for that one little cameo. We ran through that scene over and over and over, and you think ‘Oh gosh, this has to be the last one!’”

In between takes, McMahon even enjoyed a chat with Elba.

“He gave me a compliment on my voice,” she shared. “He said ‘You have an amazing voice. Do you do voiceover work?’”

There was even some improvisation work involved as well.

“I originally had two lines, but while we were filming, I had an ad-lib line because they were looking for authenticity with the reporters,” mentioned McMahon. “I just thought to myself, 'What would I do in the moment of reporting?' I would chase him down, get through security, and just ask him anything I could think of.”

Fast forward to when her work on the project was done.

She was still in the dark about a few key things, including the name of the movie, the overall plot, and a potential release date.

“I didn’t know anything other than Idris Elba was in it and he was playing the president. Then a year goes by and my husband is on Netflix, and he sees this new White House thriller. He thinks it might be the movie I was in because Idris Elba is in it. We watched the first hour and I’m thinking to myself, 'This can’t be the right movie. I don’t see how my scene goes into a nuclear warfare story.' It was either that or they cut my scene,” said McMahon. “Then Idris goes into the gym, and then there’s my scene. Watching it on my TV was such a surreal moment, but I do like to make some light fun of it because it’s my five seconds of fame, right?”

McMahon also shared that the gig arrived at a rather difficult period in her life.

“It came at a serendipitous time when my mentor passed away, and he always told me I should do acting,” she concluded. “It's hilarious because I never wanted to be an actress, but I feel like it was helping me from the other side.”
