Pickleball license plate available in Washington state

Washington recently unveiled a new license plate to honor pickleball, the state’s official sport.

It’s the second of seven specialty plates to roll out since lawmakers approved them earlier this year.

The plate was a project spearheaded by the nonprofit Seattle Metro Pickleball Association (SMPA).

“We’re thrilled to see our efforts become reality,” said Kate Van Gent, vice president of the SMPA. “The goal has always been to celebrate the sport created here in Washington and enjoyed across the state.”

Pickleball was named the state sport in 2022 by then-Gov. Jay Inslee in a ceremony at the Bainbridge Island home where it was founded in 1965.

According to a Nov. 26 story in the Washington State Standard, Van Gent and company began pursuing a pickleball plate in 2023.

A set of pickleball plates costs $157.25, along with some additional fees if you want to personalize them.

A portion of the fee will go to the SMPA, and proceeds will be used for building and maintaining dedicated public pickleball courts.
