A

• ATP (Around the Post): A shot hit around the outside of the net post rather than over the net, with no height restriction since it doesn't need to clear the net. Read more.

• Backhand: A shot struck with the back of the hand facing the direction of the swing, typically the less dominant side for most players.
• Banger: A player who relies heavily on hard, fast shots (drives and smashes) rather than a soft, patient game.
• Bert Shot: A variation of the Erne where a player hits the ball from outside the sideline while it's still on their own side of the net. Read more.

• Centerline: The line dividing each service area into left and right service boxes.
• Chainsaw Serve: A banned spin-serve technique that used an exaggerated spinning motion on the ball before contact. Read more.

• Consolation Bracket: A secondary bracket giving first-round losers in the main draw a chance to keep competing. Read more.

• Deflection Test: A technical method for measuring a paddle's core stiffness by how much it flexes under pressure. Read more.
• Dink: A soft, controlled shot hit into the opponent's kitchen, central to kitchen-line strategy. Read more.

• Drive: A hard, fast shot hit with power and pace.
• Drop Serve: A legal serve where the ball is dropped and allowed to bounce once before being struck, with no swing or contact-point restrictions.

• Erne: An aggressive shot where a player jumps or steps outside the sideline to volley near the net post without entering the kitchen. Read more.

F

• Fault: A rule violation that ends a rally, resulting in a side-out or a point depending on the scoring format.
• Firefight: A fast-paced volley exchange at the kitchen line, typically involving quick reflex shots at close range.
• Forehand: A shot struck with the palm facing the direction of the swing, typically a player's dominant, more powerful side.
• Freeze Rule: A format in some rally-scoring games that reverts to side-out scoring near the end of the match. Read more.

H

• Hinder: Outside interference (such as a ball rolling onto the court) that prevents a legitimate shot, allowing the rally to be replayed by mutual agreement.

I

• I Formation: A doubles serving strategy where the server's partner crouches low near the centerline before the serve. Read more.

• Kitchen: The non-volley zone, a 7-foot area on each side of the net where volleys are not allowed. Read more.

• Pickled: Losing a game 11-0 (or the equivalent shutout) without scoring a single point.
• Pickler: A colloquial term for a pickleball player.
• Pop Test: An informal method for assessing a paddle's responsiveness by dropping a ball on its face. Read more.

R

• Rally Scoring: A scoring format awarding a point on every rally, regardless of who served. Read more.
• Reliability Score: A DUPR metric (1–100%) reflecting how confident the system is that a rating is current and accurate.
• Reset: A defensive shot that softens a fast incoming ball, neutralizing an opponent's attack. Read more.
• Round Robin: A tournament format where every entrant in a pool plays every other entrant before any elimination occurs. Read more.

S

• Sandbagging: Intentionally self-rating below your actual skill level to compete in an easier bracket.
• Serve: The underhand shot that begins every rally.
• Side-Out: The transfer of serve from one team to the other after a serving fault or, in traditional scoring, a lost rally.
• Skinny Singles: A half-court practice variant of singles play, often used for drilling.

• Third Shot Drop: A soft shot from the baseline that lands in the kitchen, allowing the serving team to advance to the net. Read more.
