Bar, Wright down Johns bros to make men’s doubles final
ROCKWALL, TX - For the second tournament in a row, Matt Wright has dispatched Ben and Collin Johns in the semifinals.
He did so in Atlanta with Federico Staksrud, and again Saturday night in Texas alongside Dekel Bar.
The No. 4 seeds defeated the top-seeded brothers 11-7, 11-9 to make it to Championship Sunday in their first tournament together this year.
“I like Dekel’s power and length,” Wright said of his six-foot-three partner. “I think it’s tough for teams to get in against us sometimes on the drop because we are both tall, and we can both create off of the fourth ball.”
That length would go on to play an important role—especially in Game 2—as Bar executed several ernes on the left side to disrupt the usual dinking patterns of the Johns brothers.
“Looking for patterns and identifying what the other team likes to do and when they’re gonna hit the ball to that area is key,” Bar explained about what makes a successful erne. “It just comes down to timing and anticipating your opponents’ shots.”
The tandem will face No. 2 seeds JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier for the title.
