David, Wilson battle past Irvine, Tardio to make semis
ROCKWALL, TX - Vivienne David and Thomas Wilson are into the mixed doubles semifinals at the CIBC Texas Open powered by Tixr after a 10-12, 11-9, 11-4 victory over Jessie Irvine and Gabe Tardio.
The No. 2 seeds faced the unique challenge of taking on a newer pairing that they had never faced before and had to find a way to deal with Tardio’s unpredictable attacks and Irvine’s right-side steadiness.
“You never really know what he’s gonna go for,” Wilson said of Tardio. “He’s a super complete player with reach who can cover the whole court pretty much, and Jessie is a rock. She hits big counters and has her own little deceptions that work for her, so it was just about adjusting to a new team and the spots they were attacking.”
It seemed like the Texas-based tandem fully realized those adjustments about midway through Game 3. After going down 1-4, they scored the match’s final ten points to advance in style.
A matchup against either siblings JW and Jorja Johnson or the pairing of Jade Kawamoto and Federico Staksrud awaits them on Humana Championship Court.
