Fahey comes back from the brink, outlasts Buckner in three games
Kate Fahey claimed her second career singles title with a 5-11, 11-9, 11-8 victory over No. 4 seed Brooke Buckner.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the No. 9 seed, however. After dropping Game 1, Fahey found herself trailing 5-9 in the second, just two points away from defeat.
She didn’t back down and scored the final six points of that second game, thanks to her ability to react to Buckner’s powerful drives and still finish points with clean volleys at the kitchen line.
Fahey carried that momentum into Game 3, where she gained an 8-4 advantage that she would use to eventually close out the win.
“I just went out there and tried to get as many balls back as I could because [Brooke] really strikes the ball well,” Fahey said of the effort. “I’m really proud of the way I came back in the second there and stayed mentally tough.”
Both Fahey and Buckner had storied tennis careers at the University of Michigan, and Fahey says that some of the rallies brought her back to her time on the tennis court.
“There was a little PTSD there when we were battling from the baseline, but that’s the way I like to play,” she noted. “Brooke definitely hits the ball a little harder than I do, but it was a little reminiscent of college tennis for sure.”
In the bronze medal match, No. 2 seed Catherine Parenteau took down No. 16 seed Genie Bouchard 11-5, 11-2.
