Fight erupts at Florida pickleball match, couple facing charges

Pickleball matches sometimes have a funny way of getting out of hand.

But an incident this past Sunday at Spruce Creek Country Club in Port Orange, Florida—just south of Daytona Beach—was no laughing matter because it landed married couple Anthony Sapienza, 63, and Julianne Sapienza, 51, in serious legal trouble.

According to a February 10 report in the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Anthony Sapienza of Ponce Inlet struck his opponent with a paddle, cutting him above the left eye, and then provoked the situation further by insulting the man’s wife.

Sapienza was arrested and charged with two counts of battery on a person 65 years of age or older, along with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon causing bodily harm.

"Prior to the alleged attack, during a match, Anthony Sapienza accused his opponent, Christopher Fischer, of stepping into the "kitchen" (coming too close to the net). After the match ended, Sapienza called Fischer's wife a vulgar name, and he objected," wrote reporter Patricio G. Balona.

"Fischer told deputies Sapienza approached him and punched him in the left side of the face and then struck him with his paddle, causing significant bleeding. Deputies noted in the arrest report that Fischer had a cut over the left eye with visible swelling and blood," continued Balona.

"After the paddle strike, Sapienza and Fischer fell to the ground, where Sapienza continued to hit him with a closed fist in the face and neck... Fischer's wife, Brenda, said she ran to her husband, and Sapienza pushed her to the ground," he added.

A man named David Falandys reportedly intervened to pull Sapienza off Fischer.

Sapienza subsequently punched Falandys in the face, and when he hit the ground, Julianne Sapienza entered the court, yelled in his face, and punched him.

She was arrested and charged with battery on a person 65 years of age or older.

The Sapienzas have been released on bail.

And all of this over an alleged "kitchen" violation. What is this world coming to?

Everyone needs to take a breath and just enjoy America’s fastest-growing sport a little more gracefully.

Court records indicate prosecutors will pursue charges against the Sapienzas.
