Five Amarillo pickleball players killed in plane crash near Wimberley
A plane crash in Central Texas last week claimed the lives of five members of the Amarillo pickleball community, as officials continue to investigate what caused the aircraft to go down.
The victims were traveling Thursday aboard a small Cessna 421C aircraft when it crashed in a wooded area near Wimberley, about 40 miles southwest of Austin. Authorities said the plane was moving at a “high rate of speed” at the time of impact and caught fire, indicating severe damage.
The Amarillo Pickleball Club identified the five victims as Seren Wilson, Brooke Skypala, Stacy Hedrick, Glen Appling, and Hayden Dillard, ranging in age from their teens to mid-40s. In a statement, the club described them as “five members of our Amarillo pickleball family,” mourning a loss that has deeply affected the tight-knit group.
“They were excellent players,” Amarillo Pickleball Club President Dan Dyer told the Associated Press, recalling his time competing alongside several of the victims. “They were out to win some games.”
The group had departed from Amarillo and was headed to New Braunfels National Airport for a tournament when the crash occurred. Officials confirmed there was no indication of a mid-air collision, noting that another aircraft in the area landed safely.
The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration. Investigators transported the wreckage to a secure facility for further examination.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash.
The Amarillo Pickleball Club is establishing a benefit fund to support the families of the five killed through Amarillo National Bank.
MealTrain campaigns have also been set up for those who wish to donate money or gift cards as well as provide meals to support the families:
