Pilot program unveiled for inaugural Western Massachusetts High School Pickleball League
It's just another sign that pickleball is making inroads with more and more young people.
According to a report by Western Mass News, a pilot program is underway for the inaugural Western Massachusetts High School Pickleball League.
There are four participating schools and 20 students on each club team from Westfield Technical Academy, Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion, South Hadley High School, and Springfield International Charter.
Matches are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays until the end of October on the 14 pickleball courts located behind Westfield Tech.
The athletic coordinator at Westfield Tech, Kyle Dulude, was confident the program would be a hit.
"I talked to some of the kids at school during class, and they’re like. ‘Yeah, I’ll do it. I’ll do it’ so we had a lot of interest and the kids really took off with it," he shared.
Westfield Tech coach, Ron Nadeau, hopes that pickleball will become a varsity sport across the state in the next one to three years.
