Upset alert: Ge, Johnson take down Navratil, Alshon
MESA, AZ – Locals Augustus Ge and Craig Johnson knocked Zane Navratil and Christian Alshon out of the men’s doubles bracket during third-round action of the Carvana PPA Mesa Arizona Cup on Wednesday.
“I’m feeling elated, this feels like a huge sigh of relief,” said Johnson, following the 7-11, 11-8, 11-4 victory. “We keep calling this our last dance because everyone knows Augie is going to the moon and I get to play with him one last chance. It’s been our big joke that this is our last dance, so it’s beyond fantastic.”
Ge's popularity skyrocketed after his stellar performance at the Desert Ridge Open.
“Still at home here in Phoenix, so it feels incredible,” mentioned Ge.
Ge and Johnson had a lot of supporters sitting courtside cheering them on.
“It’s so motivating. When you’re playing a long hard point and you lose it, you bounce back so quickly with everyone there,” noted Johnson.
“They just keep you locked in and keep you focused, and it really helped us this time,” praised Ge.
Ge and Johnson will battle fifth-seeded Federico Staksrud and Pablo Tellez on Thursday.
