From table tennis to pickleball stardom: Danni-Elle Townsend’s unlikely rise

Danni-Elle Townsend’s rise in professional pickleball is anything but typical.

The Australian standout didn’t grow up dreaming of the sport, and she certainly didn’t map out a job that would take her across the world.

“I didn’t know this was going to be my career path,” Townsend said. “It ended up just kind of falling into place.”

What began as a casual introduction has quickly evolved into a full-fledged pursuit of becoming one of the best players in the world.

Before pickleball, Townsend’s life actually revolved around table tennis, a sport deeply embedded in her family.

“My mom and dad both met through table tennis,” she explained. “My brothers have competed at Worlds and I’ve played at a world level as a junior and as a senior.”

From an early age, she trained relentlessly, building the discipline and competitive foundation that would later shape her success.

Her introduction to pickleball, however, was anything but serious.

“I was just playing with my mom and stepdad and my brothers,” Townsend said. “It was just a little bit of fun.”

That changed when her mom connected her with a former table tennis player who had transitioned into pickleball.

Even then, the start was rocky.

“At first, he didn’t even want to take me on,” Townsend admitted. “I was actually very bad at pickleball.”

But that early struggle became motivation.

“I didn’t like being bad at the sport,” she said. “So then I started taking it a bit more seriously.”

Townsend is quick to push back on the idea that her transition was seamless.

“I wouldn’t say that I just had natural talent,” she said. “It was a lot of reps. I’m pretty perfectionist in everything I do.”

While her work ethic carried over from table tennis, the skills themselves required adjustment and patience.

Her pivot to pickleball was also shaped by a difficult moment in her table tennis career.

“I got kicked out of the national team. They pushed me out,” she said. “It was kind of the push that I needed.”

Rather than stepping away, Townsend used the setback as fuel.

“I was like, well, if you want me to be a professional, I’ll do it in a different sport,” she said. “And I went and did that.”

Pickleball offered not just a new opportunity, but a better fit for who she is.

“It kind of lets me be who I am,” she mentioned. “It encourages my personality a little bit more.”

That personality has become one of her defining traits.

With a background in acting, Townsend embraces the spotlight and thrives on connecting with fans.

“I want to perform and I want to put on a show,” she said. “If people can see me being true, then they have someone to be behind.”

Her confidence is a natural extension of her preparation.

“I think confidence comes from the work you put in,” Townsend said. “If I’ve put in the work, why would I not have the confidence?”

Her journey to the United States—the current hub of top-level professional pickleball—came with real risk.

“I came over for a month and I left America with less than 500 Australian in all of my bank accounts,” she said. “I actually needed to win that tournament that I came and played, otherwise I didn’t know where I was going to stay.”

It was a defining moment that underscored just how much she was willing to bet on herself.

Since then, Townsend has begun to find her footing on tour.

“I think I’ve got my people,” she said. “Everyone’s been really welcoming to me.”

Adjusting to life far from home hasn’t been easy, but she has embraced both the challenge and the opportunity to compete at the highest level. Her mindset remains grounded in a simple belief: “I don’t believe there’s a magic hat that you can put on and then you’re the best in the world. Everyone has to work for it.”

That mentality continues to drive her forward.

While she could pursue opportunities elsewhere, Townsend is focused on testing herself against the best competition.

“I want to play against the best, and the best currently is here,” she said.

Her ultimate goal is clear and unwavering.

“I want to be the best,” Townsend said. “I’ve never done anything and settled for anything less.”

From a casual hit with family to chasing greatness on the pro tour, Townsend’s journey is a testament to resilience, work ethic, and self-belief.

“I’m going to do what I can to develop my skills,” she concluded, “and be the best player I can be.”

For Townsend, this unexpected path is only just beginning.
