How a Super Bowl comeback and a brave tweet landed Genie Bouchard a date
Genie Bouchard may be known for her impressive tennis career, Sports Illustrated and Vogue photoshoots, and her switch to pro pickleball, but there's another reason someone might remember her name.
Recently, Bouchard went on The Ok Sweetie Show where she shared one of the best stories from her dating life that began with the Super Bowl and a brave tweet.
It was 2017 and the New England Patriots were playing the Atlanta Falcons.
The Falcons were in complete control of the game early.
“I was literally just sitting on the couch with my mom and my younger brother. I had no cool Superbowl plans or parties, and it was a blowout,” recalled Bouchard. “The Atlanta Falcons were killing the Patriots, so I just tweeted ‘I knew Atlanta would win.’ That riled people up and this guy says, ‘If the Patriots come back, let’s go on a date.’”
Bouchard was happy to oblige.
“The moment I tweeted ‘Sure’ to his date request, there was the biggest differential in points. It was 28-3 at the end of the third quarter,” she said. “There’s no chance it was happening, but then they called it the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history.”
The Patriots rallied for a 34-28 victory.
By the next day, Bouchard’s tweet blew up across the globe. Her friends were messaging her and asking about it. Bouchard’s uncle, who lives in England, told her that she was the top story on the BBC.
“I had to do it. We went to the Nets game courtside in Brooklyn. It was a whole thing. NBA TV followed us around on our date. He got me Tiffany earrings. It was really cute, and it was really sweet,” she explained. “I think people loved it because it was just a happy story. There’s so much negative news out there all the time about everything, and it was just one of those things that if you shoot your shot, it might happen.”
At the time, Bouchard actually had a boyfriend. He didn’t respond well to the hoopla around the date, so they ultimately broke up.
Believe it or not, Bouchard and the guy from Twitter maintained a friendship for several years.
“He was someone I could have potentially dated. He was a few years younger than me, but he was cute. I wasn’t trying to actually date him, but it was fun and we kept in touch,” she mentioned. “We got a lot of attention. It was one of those things where you go through trauma with someone and you trauma bond. We kind of trauma bonded with this crazy event that happened.”
Though Bouchard didn’t end up with the Twitter boy, it made for a great story.
