‘Came for the Game, Stayed for the People’: Exploring pickleball’s most meaningful stories of connection

What keeps us coming back to pickleball isn’t just the game—it’s the people we meet along the way.

At its core, pickleball is about community. Time and time again, you hear stories of lives transformed simply because someone decided to step onto a court for the first time.

Author and pickleball coach Colleen Riddle set out to capture that magic in a powerful collection of real-life experiences.

Came for the Game, Stayed for the People: True Stories of Pickleball, Friendship & Belonging brings together 18 heartfelt stories of individuals who showed up to play, and left with something far more meaningful—connection, confidence, and a true sense of belonging.

“It’s about what can happen when we’re willing to show up. Sometimes we think we’re saying yes to a game, a class, or something completely ordinary. We have no idea that one small yes might introduce us to the people who will become part of our lives,” said Riddle, earlier this week via EINPresswire.

While pickleball courts serve as the backdrop, this story goes far beyond the game itself—it’s really about the people.

For many, showing up to play pickleball seems simple enough. Maybe they’re looking for a new hobby, a fun way to stay active, or just curious about the sport everyone seems to be talking about. But what they often find is something much deeper: a sense of community that keeps them coming back.

I’ve heard countless stories of people turning to pickleball during major life transitions, only to discover a group of people who show up for them exactly when they need it most.

I’ve seen it in my own life, too. Pickleball has had a meaningful impact on me, and I know I’m far from alone in that.

It’s remarkable how something like America's fastest-growing sport can end up changing a life. That’s the heart of what Riddle captures in her work.

As a coach, Riddle has had a front-row seat to the friendships, support systems, and connections that naturally form on the court. Through these real stories, she hopes to inspire others and offer encouragement to those navigating life’s biggest changes.

“You don’t always know which yes will matter. Sometimes courage is loud. But sometimes it’s simply walking through a door, showing up when it would be easier to stay home, or allowing yourself to be new at something,” said Riddle. “That small step can change more than you realized.”

Sometimes, it’s a small act of bravery that changes everything—like participating in open play.

Each story in the collection is paired with three of Riddle’s life lessons, inviting readers to reflect on how those experiences might connect to their own lives. The lessons are inspired by Quietly Brave: A Reflection Journal, a companion book designed to help readers turn inspiration into meaningful personal insight.

The journal includes all 54 life lessons, along with guided prompts and dedicated space to write, process, and reflect.
