If you could change one rule in pickleball, what would it be?
The Pickleball Facebook Forum is pure entertainment.
From airing out amateur grievances to gossiping about the pros, there are a variety of fascinating discussions taking shape on a regular basis.
The latest question that sparked a lot of conversation was asked by Eric Daw: “If you could change one rule in pickleball, what would it be?”
As per usual, the picklers shared their thoughts. Some had excellent ideas.
“Must wear eye protection,” said Cindy Diregel.
“Do away with the fault caused by the momentum into the kitchen,” wrote WH Ben.
“No point for hitting your opponent with the ball,” indicated Ali Catherine Darias.
The pros wouldn’t like that one at all.
“Material rules on either paddle surface and/or the ball to make the sport much quieter. Simple change that would solve a lot of problems,” mentioned Mark Bonfigli, who must live near a pickleball court.
“Tournament players must face a qualification game the day before to validate their level of play to stop the sandbagging,” suggested Frank Carril.
“Paddles that are illegal in tournaments should not be allowed in rec play. They are illegal for a reason,” wrote Jackie Briscoe Harrison.
“Bounce serve only. Everyone uses illegal serves in rec play,” said Richard Doherty.
The serve was a big area of debate. Mostly, people were suggesting to only allow bounce serves because the rules for serving out of the air change frequently and it’s extremely difficult to maintain those rules during rec play.
Other players had some more drastic ideas for rule changes.
“The other side of the court can’t call balls out,” said Jacob Page.
“Being able to question your opponent’s calls and vice-versa. You cannot tell unless you are on top of the ball and have hyper focus,” wrote Helena Wilsbach Nesbitt.
“Not to allow 95% of shots directed at a lesser player. It sucks when you are standing there watching them all go to your partner,” said Vince Porter.
“Prohibit rule changes each year,” said John Carpenter.
“Don’t let tennis players play,” mentioned Robert Ross.
Oh my, the turf wars must still be strong at his neighborhood court.
“Only two lobs per game… use them wisely,” shared Kathy Sponholtz.
“Start the game with zero, zero, one,” said Steve Love.
“You don’t have to serve, your teammate can serve every point,” said Bobbi Slagter.
This would shake up the game. And allow players to still play even if they have the yips.
“The color of all paddles should be black,” said Jeff Marshall.
While it wouldn’t be as fun and aesthetically pleasing on the court, it would eliminate the problem of players showing up with white, pink, and yellow paddles that make it difficult to see the ball.
“Kick out the whiners,” said Ryan Scott.
“I would add the celebration dance rule. After every point scored, the winning player or team must perform a celebratory dance for at least five seconds before continuing play. Failure to dance enthusiastically enough, as judged by the opposing team, revokes the point,” said Terry Cardenas.
I couldn’t agree more with Cardenas. We need more dance moves on the court.
