PSA to pickleball pros: Get creative, we need match cellies

Here's my public service announcement for pickleball's best athletes during the 2025 tournament season: We need more victory dances after a good point.

Sometimes, I’ll watch other sports on TV, and I can't stop thinking about the Minnesota Vikings’ dance moves during the 2024 campaign. I’m genuinely disappointed that they’re done because I can’t help but wonder what other touchdown cellies they had up their sleeves.

The Vikings truly stepped it up, even showing choreographed moves from some of the best films of all-time, including: The Parent Trap, Camp Rock, White Chicks, and High School Musical.

They even did the dance from viral Australian break dancer, Raygun.

The Vikings' cellies brought so much joy to my viewing experience and got me thinking: Why don’t we have these in professional pickleball?

All we get is a paddle tap and a celebratory wave to the audience when we could be getting Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters doing the entire Parent Trap handshake to mark another mixed doubles title.

Come on, pros! Make it happen.

If inspiration is the problem, there are tons of hilarious viral videos already out there to get the creative juices flowing.

I'm not asking for elaborate dance moves. Just have a little fun with it.

This is clearly something amateurs and rec players alike are thinking about and actively implementing, so why not elite of the elite?

The Vikings’ viral cellies were spearheaded by Camryn Bynum, so we need some members of the PPA Tour to step up and organize a rehearsal.

Personally, I think Yates Johnson is perfect to lead the charge. Just look at this footage from the Pickleballtv broadcast at the Zimmer Biomet Masters powered by Invited.

Yates has the playful personality and the drive to absolutely commit to the bit. And that’s exactly what we need.

I think it's safe to say that he’d love to celebrate a victory in style.

And with the pros coming from a variety of sports backgrounds, we could really see something extra special on the court.

Jessie Irvine was a dancer when she was a kid, so she could organize a tap number with her dubs partners.

Or put on the pros' favorite hype songs, like “Bet On It” from High School Musical 2 for Allyce Jones, and watch the cellies galore.

Tyson McGuffin already has a bold, vivacious personality. I refuse to believe he wouldn’t bust a move for his kiddos sitting courtside. That goes for Jack Sock, too.

Even Waters showcased some cellies with content creators, The Pointer Brothers.

And if the World No. 1 starts doing it, the rest will follow.

Pickleball pros take their careers seriously, as they should. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have some extra pizzazz on the court. Life’s a stage, isn’t it darling? The players have an audience, so take a bow and celly.
