NHL superstar Connor McDavid's wife says couple 'haven't been beat' in pickleball

Even if you’re not a hockey fan, you’ve probably heard about Connor McDavid and his outstanding achievements with the NHL's Edmonton Oilers and Team Canada.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players to ever step onto the ice, McDavid is a thrill to watch thanks to his blazing speed, creativity, and uncanny ability to change the game in an instant.

A seven-time NHL All-Star, McDavid’s exceptional resume features five Art Ross Trophies, four Ted Lindsay Awards, three Hart Trophies, a Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, and a Conn Smythe Trophy.

The 28-year-old most recently grabbed international headlines by scoring the tournament-winning goal for Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February.

So, you’re probably wondering: Where does America's fastest-growing sport fit into McDavid's story?

On the latest episode of the Never Offside with Julie & Cat podcast, hosted by Julie Petry and Cat Toffoli, his wife Lauren Kyle McDavid shared that the couple has a passion for pickleball.

"I can [keep up with him]. We're good partners against other people," she explained. "Both of us [are competitive]. I think we're equal, very equal. I think I show my competitive nature more—in a sense like I care more to win in like silly situations against family or friends. He's less out there, but I know inside he internally is very competitive."

Lauren confirmed that the McDavids are a formidable duo on the court.

And she’s confident they can keep that winning streak going.

"We haven't been beat," she stated with a laugh. "But this is an invitation."

Lauren then shared a fun pickleball story featuring both Connor and his superstar teammate Leon Draisaitl.

"We have been on vacation, and it was funny because the guys actually joined this like pickleball tournament that the hotel was having, and so Celeste [Draisaitl's wife] and I went and watched them, and they got crushed by this couple from New York," she said. "It was a girl-guy couple, and he was yelling at his partner like, 'Get him!' They got crushed. We were like, 'What's going on? You guys are professional athletes! Come on!'"

Lauren confirmed that Connor and Leon handled the loss gracefully.

"They were OK," she mentioned. "They moved on quick."

Lauren doesn’t think Connor and Leon's opponents realized the magnitude of their victory, which makes the whole situation even more enjoyable.

"I love that," quipped Cat. "Shout out to that New York couple that had no idea who they took down."

"If you're listening, you know who you took down, guys," added Julie. "That's so funny."

Lauren also revealed Connor's passion for playing chess, so perhaps a meet-and-greet with rising PPA Tour star and chess aficionado John Lucian Goins might be in order soon.
