Sixteen-year-old Reid Jarjosa deserves a round of applause for his efforts to introduce pickleball to kids in Detroit through a nonprofit he founded in 2022 called City Pickle.

According to the organization's official website, City Pickle "provides programming to community organizations and schools through active engagement, volunteering, and pickleball," which is certainly a worthy endeavor.

Jarjosa's cause was featured in a Jan. 25 story by MLive.com writer Edward Pevos.

“Since our founding, City Pickle has worked with over 3,000 kids, ages 5 to 17, across 10 locations in Detroit,” explained Jarjosa, a student at Detroit Country Day School. “Through our programs, we provide opportunities for children to build confidence, develop teamwork skills, and engage in active, social recreation.”

Pevos writes that City Pickle has partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Michigan and Detroit Parks and Recreation to secure playing spaces, while sponsorships, donations, and grants provide all the necessary equipment for participants.

“City Pickle is more than just a sports program," shared Jarjosa. "Our activities help combat childhood obesity by keeping kids active and they provide a healthy alternative to screen time, encouraging kids to put down their phones and build meaningful, face-to-face connections.”

And hopefully develop a passion for America's fastest-growing sport in the process.

"The organization focuses on personal growth by teaching values such as perseverance and healthy competition," adds City Pickle's official website. "Reid’s dedication to expanding these programs aims to foster community spirit and encourage healthy lifestyles in underserved neighborhoods."
