If you’ve been following the pickleball world lately, you’ve probably seen the bucket hat debate taking over social media. It all started when PPA and MLP CEO Connor Pardoe tweeted, “Pickleball should ban bucket hats,” after spotting a pro competing in one.

While it’s still unclear whether bucket hats will actually face a ban, there’s no denying their practicality. So instead of debating their fate, here are a few bucket hat options that deliver sun protection while still keeping your on-court look clean, polished, and professional.

The issue isn’t the bucket hat itself, it’s the fabric and overall design. Wide-brim polyester styles with drawstrings may be functional, but they don’t exactly elevate your on-court look.

So with that in mind, here are a few of my favorite bucket hats that bring both performance and style to the pickleball court.

This classic bucket hat is an easy starting point. It comes in a wide range of colors—from everyday neutrals to standout shades like royal blue, pistachio, peach, and denim. Made from 100% cotton, it’s soft yet durable, packs easily for travel, and offers UPF 50+ protection to keep you covered on sunny court days.

If you’re looking for something with a little more personality, this embroidered daisy bucket hat adds a subtle touch of pattern without overwhelming your on-court style. It’s available in a variety of colors, including white, black, yellow, pink, and purple.

Another standout option is the Polo by Ralph Lauren bucket hat. Available in several colors, these hats have a timeless, polished feel that makes them a stylish choice on and off the court. There’s also something to be said for brand recognition—wearing a bucket hat from an iconic, heritage brand with a country club aesthetic can instantly elevate your overall look.

Another premium option at a more accessible price point is Lacoste’s bucket hat. Available in classic shades like navy and sage green, these timeless designs offer a polished, elevated look without feeling overly flashy.

For a more athletic aesthetic, Nike’s bucket hat is a great choice. The sleek black Nike logo adds a clean, sporty touch while keeping the overall look simple and polished.

Another bucket hat I found especially charming is this women’s style featuring a bow detail on the side. It has a distinctly country club-inspired aesthetic and comes in elegant shades like white, cream, black, brown, and rose. If any of my pickleball girls showed up to open play wearing this, they’d instantly have one of the cutest accessories on the court.

So far, most of these examples feature minimal patterns and subtle branding. But that doesn’t mean players can’t have fun with their style—bold prints and playful designs can absolutely work on the court when they’re styled thoughtfully.

For example, if you’re wearing an all-black or all-white outfit and want to add a little personality, a floral bucket hat could be the perfect statement piece. Paired with a clean, monochromatic look, a playful pattern can add just the right amount of flair without overpowering the outfit.

This might be a hot take, but imagine a player like Jaume Martinez Vich stepping on court in a Hawaiian floral bucket hat, an all-black outfit, and matching blue court shoes. That fit would absolutely make a best-dressed list. It’s bold, fun, and perfectly matches his energetic personality.

Pickleball doesn’t have to be a buttoned-up sport where players can’t express themselves through fashion. There’s room for creativity and personality while still maintaining a level of professionalism. Thankfully, there are plenty of bucket hats that strike that balance between stylish and court-appropriate.

The real fashion offense isn’t the bucket hat itself; it’s the khaki polyester styles with drawstrings that make players look ready for a fishing trip instead of an MLP Championship match. Those are the styles I’d leave off the court.

Bucket hats don’t have to be a fashion crime in pickleball. Choose the right style, and they can be a fun, functional accessory. Just make sure you look ready to compete, not like you’re heading out to cast a line.
