Dylan Frazier serves up 'Star Wars' style with Volair

Cue the Star Wars opening theme, because Dylan Frazier has a new Volair outfit inspired by another pop culture franchise, and we need to talk about it.

I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with Frazier’s pickleball outfits. Some are an absolute delight, bringing humor and personality to the court. His collaboration with artist Keith Haring remains my favorite, with a playful pop-art design that somehow managed to look both fun and seriously cool. The Peanuts collection was cute, too. The SpongeBob look? Not quite my favorite.

Now, Frazier and Volair are entering a galaxy far, far away with a collection inspired by one of the most beloved sci-fi franchises of all time: Star Wars.

The collection includes a shirt, a bag, and several Star Wars-themed paddles, and I have to give Volair credit: This is a pretty cool collaboration. The brand continues to do something different in a paddle market where black designs with bright blue or red accents seem to dominate. A little creativity goes a long way, and Volair is clearly having fun with it.

Even better, the collection offers two distinct paddle designs: one inspired by the Jedi, and the other by the Sith. Because if you're going to bring Star Wars to the pickleball court, you might as well choose a side.

And clearly, there’s a market for it. Otherwise, Volair wouldn’t keep rolling out new collections featuring artists, beloved cartoons, and blockbuster movie franchises.

People love merch. They love wearing graphic tees featuring their favorite movies and characters. So why not combine two passions and put someone’s favorite Star Wars villain on a pickleball paddle? That’s a pretty easy sell.

But how does the self-proclaimed pickleball fashion police feel about Frazier’s latest Star Wars look? Honestly, I don’t hate it.

I’ll admit I’m biased because I’m not a huge Star Wars fan. I certainly don’t hate the franchise, but a Luke Skywalker pickleball paddle isn’t exactly going to get my heart racing. I’m simply not the target audience. Now, if Frazier showed up to the court in a Gilmore Girls shirt? He’d earn an immediate spot on the Best Dressed List.

That said, I do like the Star Wars-branded paddles. They feature iconic characters that fans will love, and I’m particularly drawn to the celestial aesthetic of the Shift WB and Shift HYB designs. They strike a nice balance between fandom and style, with a more subtle look on a quality piece of equipment.

The Darth Vader shirt isn’t half bad, either. Does it remind me of something a sixth grader might wear to theater camp? A little. But the muted color palette keeps it from going overboard. The red outline of Vader’s head is a cool touch, and when Frazier paired the shirt with bright red shoes to tie the look together, I started to see the vision.

On the bright side, the outfit hasn't landed Frazier in the crosshairs of @memesofpickleball. And in the world of pickleball fashion, that might be a win. You know a look has gone off the rails when it earns a dedicated meme post of its own.

So, is the Star Wars look that bad? No. Is it great? Also no. But it could certainly be worse.

At the end of the day, Frazier and Volair are having fun with it, and I can appreciate that. Frazier stands out as one of the few male pros willing to take a creative risk with his on-court style. While most guys stick to black tops or the classic white shirt-and-blue-shorts combo, Frazier is bringing pop culture to the pickleball court.

It’s bold, it’s different, and it’s entirely his own. And in a sea of same-same athleticwear, that deserves some credit.
