Pickleball in the cold: 3 fashion tips to stay stylish and warm

The temperature plummeted overnight from a lovely 75°F on Sunday to a bone-chilling 40°F by Monday morning. And now? I’m supposed to meet my mom and her women’s league for some outdoor pickleball. In this cold?

But there’s no way I’m showing up looking like Joey from Friends when he wore everything Chandler owned at once. I’ve got a reputation to uphold as one of the best dressed players on the court.

So here’s your ultimate guide to looking cute while staying warm playing pickleball in cold weather.

1.     Color coordination is STILL key

If you take away just one tip from this guide, let it be this: color coordination is everything.

Don’t go full Ben Johns with yellow and purple tie-dye sleeves, blue shorts, a white shirt, and orange shoes. Instead, aim for cohesion. Pick one or two colors and stick with them.

You really can’t go wrong with head-to-toe black: black top, black jacket, black pants, black hat. If your shoes are a bold color, like lilac K-Swiss, let them be the pop that elevates your look.

Matching sets also make life easy. Green leggings with a green jacket? Perfect. Keep it minimal, keep it stylish.

2.     Layers, layers, layers

Chances are, once you start moving and warming up, you’ll want to ditch the bulky outerwear. Arrive on the court bundled in a jacket, long sleeve, tank top, leggings (maybe even a pair of sweats over them), gloves, and a hat. Then, as you warm up and get ready to call "Zero-zero-two," peel off layers as needed. Stay cozy at first, and sleek once you’re in the game.

3.     Visually balance the fit

Cold weather calls for cozy fleece-lined leggings. They keep your legs toasty without sacrificing style. But skip pairing them with an oversized, baggy sweatshirt. Instead, balance your look with a fitted long-sleeve top or jacket.

The idea is simple: if your bottom half is bulky, keep your top half sleek. This way, you avoid looking like Joey from Friends wearing everything Chandler owned.

It works the other way, too. Want to rock your warmest pickleball sweatshirt? Pair it with leggings that slim and shape your figure for a balanced silhouette.

And if it’s truly freezing and you need four layers of leggings and two jackets just to survive? Maybe it’s time to visit a Picklr location and head indoors instead.

Bonus tips:

Invest in fleece-lined leggings

The first time I tried them, I knew I’d been missing out. From the outside, they look just like regular black leggings—sleek and flattering—but the cozy lining on the inside keeps your legs perfectly warm. Total game changer.

Hats and ear warmers are your friend

Winter ears are no joke. A beanie or headband ear warmer can make a huge difference. Once your ears are toasty, the rest of your body feels warmer, too, and your dinks suddenly don’t feel like a frostbite test.

But remember, all the tips in the world won’t save your outfit if you show up in a pink jacket, green sweatpants, purple leggings, and a red hat, unless your goal is to channel Emily in Paris on the court. Keep it cohesive, bundle up, and get out there.
