Pro players reveal their biggest pickleball fashion “icks”

As pickleball style continues to level up, not every on-court outfit is a win.

With so many great looks popping up, there are still plenty of fashion missteps, so I asked some of the sport’s most stylish pros to share their biggest pickleball fashion “icks” to help you steer clear of them for your next match.

“I am not a fan when girls wear skirts with leggings together,” said Alli Phillips. “I have just never been a fan of it, but you can still rock it. I’m not going to judge. I just will not be wearing it.”

For Michael Loyd, the overly baggy trend taking over menswear is a definite no-go.

“My biggest pickleball fashion issue is when you’re wearing the wrong size. Guys, make sure you’re not wearing crazy baggy stuff. Get the right fit. It goes a long way,” said Loyd. “You can have an okay outfit, but if you make sure everything fits right, it’s going to look 10 times better.”

Marcela Hones pointed to a timeless fashion “ick” that shows up everywhere, from the runway to streetwear to the pickleball court.

“My biggest fashion “ick” is when people wear navy blue with black. Eww,” she insisted.

A Best Dressed List regular, Genie Bouchard had two fashion “icks” that immediately came to mind.

“I love a matchy-matchy moment partner situation, but when it’s the exact same outfit and it’s a very detailed pattern like flowers or fire, it’s too much,” she explained. “My other “ick” is super high socks. I love a little high sock like an ankle or crew sock, but the knee-high socks are a no for me.”

Roscoe Bellamy’s “ick” is an accessory.

“My biggest pickleball fashion “ick” is when people wear the safety glasses, but they don’t pull them off. You gotta find a frame that fits your face,” he said. “People are throwing these big goggles on and you gotta make sure they’re the right ones.”

One of pro pickleball’s most fashionable coaches, Leigh Waters, shared this take.

“My “ick” is when you tell your mixed partner the color you’re wearing, he says he’s got it, and then he shows up and it’s all wrong,” said Waters.

It makes you wonder if Anna Leigh Waters has run into this issue once or twice with Ben Johns… and speaking of Johns, fashionable Pickleballtv broadcaster and sideline reporter Michelle McMahon didn’t hold back about her biggest style ick: “Teams don’t match. But more so than that, when the individual can’t match their own outfit. I’m looking at you, Ben Johns.”

Another style-savvy presence on the court, Rachel Rettger recently shared her hottest take on what she considers the ultimate pickleball fashion “ick.”

“I love the 11NIL dresses, I think people look amazing in them, and I love all the different colors,” said Rettger. “But I’m getting a little bit tired of them, and I’d love to see something new, so some new designs from that brand would be awesome.”
