Why a little black tennis dress and pickleball are a perfect match

It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for a little black tennis dress. September 1st is National Little Black Dress Day, which is a holiday I’m celebrating by proudly wearing my LBD.

I wish I was exaggerating when I say that my life was changed for the better when I bought my first little black tennis dress, but it's true.

It happened just a few months ago at Nordstrom Rack. This wasn't a regular LBD, friends. It was a gorgeous blend of polyester, spandex, and nylon – a perfectly crafted athletic tennis dress - in classic black, and with built-in biker shorts underneath to boot.

Pinch me. It was stunning. I never purchased anything so quickly.

It's actiually one of the top outfits in my closet, so I've bought another one since.

Why I love a little black tennis dress

1. It’s easy

There is nothing easier than throwing on a dress, a pair of shoes, and walking out the front door. It’s one of the many reasons why dresses and jumpsuits are so great. You don’t have to match a top or bottom together. A dress is an easy look that you don’t have to pair with anything else.

2. It’s cute

Everyone looks good in black. It’s flattering and timeless. You simply can't go wrong with black. It isn't a trendy color that goes in and out of style. It isn't like burnt orange that’s only popular in the fall. Black is the perfect slimming color for any occasion year-round.

A classic LBD will also mimic a fit and flare style, so the top will be more fitted to the torso while the skirt will flare out like an early 2000s skater skirt. This is where certain brands will add pleats to the skirt or keep it like a straight hem, or they’ll add cutouts and straps, or make it with sleeves.

And believe me when I say that style is flattering on everyone.

3. Customizable

You can wear it for pickleball, and you can also wear it to coffee with your dubs partner when you're done. Or on a grocery run. Or throw in a jacket and wear it to lunch. Pair it with your favorite lifestyle sneakers or sandals. Wear it with a hat or style your hair in an updo. You can truly style it however you like. It's the perfect day-to-day outfit.

There are even quite a few pickleball pros that have put their own spin on the LBD.

Kate Fahey most recently won gold at The Picklr Utah Open in this strappy LBD.

Lucy Kovalova wore a flattering little black tennis dress at the Pickleball Central USA Indoor Championships.

Hurricane Tyra Black took an edgy spin by adding fun accessories to her LBD to dress it up at the Selkirk Red Rock Open.

Alex Walker and Angie Walker decided to match and wore a sleek high-neck LBD at the Veolia LA Open.

Rachel Rohrabacher is a frequent LBD girl on the court, but the dress at the Veolia Sacramento Open is a personal favorite of mine with the cool mesh detailing.

The funny thing is that September 1 is also National Pet Rock Day, but I thought Little Black Dress Day was more applicable to pickleball.
