Johnson family donates 12 pickleball courts to Kansas hometown

The Johnsons definitely haven't forgotten their Sunflower State roots.

On Monday, the family was front and center for a ribbon cutting event at Jack Johnson Tennis Center in Pittsburg, KS to participate in the opening of 12 new pickleball courts that were made possible by their $600,000 donation.

“It’s really special to be here for our hometown and just to get to see how much that it is even grown from even the last time we were here, which was like two years ago now,” said JW Johnson, in a report by KSN 16 reporter Jacob Cooperman.

Julie Johnson and Jack Johnson are both graduates of Pittsburg State University.

Julie worked as a physical therapist in Pittsburg, while Jack ran a veterinary practice there for 38 years at Broadway Animal Hospital.

JW grew up in Pittsburg before the family moved to Naples, FL to pursue tennis careers for both him and his sister, Jorja.

“We see all the time that the pickleball courts are completely full whereas the tennis courts just have a few people out there, or none even,” said Jack.

Cooperman indicated that Monday's event was "the culmination of decades of dedication the family has given to the sport" and that the Johnsons plan "to donate additional resources to help other communities, as the sport they love continues to grow."
