Though unfortunately, their run was halted by NC State, who’s set to face off against the defending champions of the DUPR Collegiate National Championships, UVA.
Match Spotlight: UVA vs TCU in Round of 16
To get to the quarter finals, UVA had one of the most dynamic and electrifying battles of the day. In the round of 16, the 2023 Champions, UVA, went up against the No. 3 seeded TCU that truly saw the two teams evenly matched and sent them into an electrifying Dream Breaker that was a back-and-forth nail biter.
Each team had dozens of people each standing courtside, decked out in their school’s gear, and cheered and chanted so loud – with the incredible enthusiasm and fervor that only college sports can have. This match certainly won with the rowdiest crowd of the day.
But the defending champs took home the victory with a score of 22-10 in the Dream Breaker.
Team captain of the UVA Pickleball Club, Eli Mautner weighed in on this monumental victory.
“There’s something about this team. Whenever we’re down, we always find a way. I think a big part of it is that we have 20 people screaming their heads off on the sideline in UVA gear. They believe in us. And we believe in ourselves, and we always find a way to get it done,” said Mautner.
“We spend a lot of time together on and off the court. It’s a group of people that really love each other and that makes all the difference,” continued Mautner.
Of course, Mautner sees UVA taking home the victory again this year. He said, “Without a doubt.”
Quarter Final Highlights
The quarter finals had two monumental Dream Breakers. The first being No. 1 FAU and No. 3 Clemson. FAU has been the favorite to win the Championship, but their run was put to a dramatic halt by the Clemson Tigers in a Dream Breaker, winning 21-15 against the No. 1 seed.
Clemson proceeds to the semi-finals where they will face off against UVA.
UVA looked strong in the quarters against NC State, who took the victory in a swift three games.
No. 1 Utah Valley and No. 2 UNC endured an epic battle that sent the two teams into the quarter final’s second Dream Breaker. UNC came out on top with a final 22-20 score in the Dream Breaker.
Utah Tech in the No. 1 seed maintained their strong hold against each opponent. Tech won in four games against the No. 2 seed, Indiana.
Clemson versus UVA and UNC versus Utah Tech will face off in the semis to get one step closer to becoming the 2024 DUPR Collegiate National Champion.
