3 things to watch for on Friday at MLP St. Louis

The Major League Pickleball season continues Friday at MLP St. Louis, where 11 teams will be in action across four days at Chaifetz Arena on the campus of Saint Louis University.

The first three days feature Group Play before the top 4 teams from each group advance to the Standing Point matches on Super Sunday.

Here are the groups for this week’s event:

Here is the order of play:

Now, let’s get into what to watch for.

  • Several teams—notably the SoCal Hard Eights, Phoenix Flames, and Bay Area Breakers—are set to make some changes to their starting lineups. The Hard Eights are putting Rafa Lenhard into the lineup for their clash against the Las Vegas Night Owls, which sets him up to make his MLP debut playing alongside Armaan Bhatia in men’s doubles and Cailyn Campbell in mixed doubles. 17-year-old Will MacKinnon, who made his MLP debut on Thursday, is set to return to the lineup for the team’s later clash against the Utah Black Diamonds. For Phoenix, Wyatt Stone will return to the lineup after sitting out the team’s loss to SoCal on Thursday. He will play men’s doubles with Jonathan Truong and mixed doubles with Daria Walczak in the team’s first contest against Las Vegas before he and Cam Chaffin split starting duties in their afternoon clash against the Los Angeles Mad Drops. And for Bay Area, 16-year-old Ella Yeh will return to the starting lineup over Mya Bui for the team’s match against the Palm Beach Royals. Yeh will partner with Genie Erokhina in women’s doubles and Luc Pham in mixed doubles.

  • The Atlanta Bouncers are switching up their mixed doubles lineup after both pairings have struggled mightily in the early stages of the season. Kaitlyn Christian/Jay Devilliers and Jessie Irvine/Jaume Martinez Vich share a 1-6 record, so the Bouncers will now have Irvine team up with Devilliers and Christian partner with Martinez Vich. Notably, Irvine/Devilliers have 13 PPA Tour mixed doubles medals together, with their most recent one coming in 2023. They will look to reignite their chemistry on Friday as Atlanta takes on the Orlando Squeeze and St. Louis Shock.

  • One of the most intriguing matchups of the day—and potentially the week—is the bout between the Los Angeles Mad Drops and Brooklyn Pickleball Team. The Mad Drops took home the inaugural Super Sunday belt at their season-opening event in Dallas, while Brooklyn is playing its first event of the season. The women’s doubles game should be particularly entertaining, as it will feature the ‘Kawamoto Bowl’: LA’s Jade Kawamoto/Catherine Parenteau taking on Brooklyn’s Jackie Kawamoto/Rachel Rohrabacher. This will be the fourth match on Championship Court.
