3 things to watch for on Saturday at MLP Austin

The Major League Pickleball season continues Saturday at MLP Austin presented by Waterdrop, where 11 teams will be in action across four days at Austin Pickle Ranch.

The first three days feature Group Play before the top 4 teams from each group advance to the Standing Point matches on Super Sunday.

Here are the groups for this week’s event:

Group A: California Black Bears, Carolina Hogs, Columbus Sliders, Miami Pickleball Club, SoCal Hard Eights

Group B: Atlanta Bouncers, Bay Area Breakers, Dallas Flash, Florida Smash, New Jersey 5s, Texas Ranchers

Here is the order of play:

Now, let’s get into what to watch for.

  • Jay Devilliers is set to return to the lineup for the Atlanta Bouncers after missing both of the team’s matches on Saturday. Devilliers should be a welcome sight for a Bouncers squad that is already competing without an injured Kaitlyn Christian this week. The Bouncers will close out group play with matches against the Dallas Flash and Florida Smash.

  • The New Jersey 5s will take on the Texas Ranchers in one of the day’s most intriguing matchups. The 5s have won nine straight matches dating back to MLP Columbus and have looked just as sharp in Austin, while the Ranchers rebounded from their opening-day loss with wins against Florida and Dallas and Friday. Nico Acevedo, who the Ranchers acquired in a massive trade after Columbus, projects to be the X-factor for a Texas squad looking to make some noise on its home court. This will be the second match of the day on Championship Court.

  • Group B has been especially competitive this week. Behind New Jersey (3-0) and Texas (2-1), there are four teams sitting at 1-2: Bay Area, Dallas, Florida, and Atlanta. Only two of those four teams will advance to Super Sunday to compete for standings points, so each one of their matches on Saturday will carry extra significance as they jockey for position.

Action from the Texas capital begins at 8:30am CT on Pickleballtv.
