Five reasons MLP events are a must for pickleball fans

We’re halfway through the MLP season, and if you haven’t experienced an event in person yet, now is the time to grab a ticket and see what the excitement is all about.

From nonstop action to unforgettable atmosphere, here are five reasons it should be your next pickleball outing.

1.     The energy is unmatched

MLP just has a different energy. After attending plenty of MLP and PPA Tour events, there’s something unique about the team-based competition that brings out the passion in players and fans alike. The crowds are louder, the stakes feel higher, and when a championship comes down to a DreamBreaker, the intensity is unmatched. Watching teams battle point by point with a title on the line creates a level of excitement that you won’t find anywhere else in pickleball.

2.
    Watch unlikely partnerships

For the diehard pickleball fans who follow the players and stay up to date with the latest storylines, an MLP event adds another layer of excitement to watching the pros compete. Instead of seeing the same partnerships week after week, fans get the chance to watch unexpected combinations come together.

For example, we’re accustomed to seeing Ben Johns compete alongside Gabe Tardio and Anna Leigh Waters on the PPA Tour, but at MLP events, it’s exciting to watch him team up with LA Mad Drops teammates like Max Freeman and Jade Kawamoto. With trades and roster moves constantly reshaping teams, MLP creates unique pairings and matchups that you simply won’t see on the PPA Tour, where partnerships tend to remain more consistent.

3.
    See your favorite pros live

I can’t overstate how much fun it is to watch the best players in the world compete live. If you’ve watched the action on Pickleballtv, seeing it in person takes the experience to an entirely different level. There’s nothing like being in the stands, feeling the energy of the crowd, and jumping to your feet alongside fellow fans after an incredible point.

Watching the pros live also gives you a whole new appreciation for the game. You get to see the strategy behind every shot, the split-second decisions that create winning points, and the small details in their footwork, technique, and style that separate them from the rest of the field. It’s the kind of experience that will have you leaving the arena eager to get back on the court and try adding a few pro-level moves to your own game — maybe even working on your twoey like Connor Garnett.

And then there are the moments you simply have to see live, the highlight-reel plays that look impossible on a screen. Watch Hurricane Tyra Black make an unbelievable defensive save, somehow doing the splits and still finding a way to win the point. See Allyce Jones launch into volleyball-style dives that leave the crowd in disbelief. These are the kinds of jaw-dropping moments that make attending a live MLP event such a memorable experience.

4.     Shake hands with your favorite athletes

One of the things that makes professional pickleball so special is how accessible the athletes are. At both MLP and PPA Tour events, fans aren’t separated from their favorite players. Pros like Anna Bright, Chris Haworth, and many others are often walking around the venue, interacting with fans, signing autographs, and taking pictures.

There aren’t many sports where you can attend a professional event and casually walk up to a top player like Hunter Johnson for a quick conversation or a selfie. That level of access creates a unique connection between the athletes and fans that you won’t find anywhere else.

5.
    It’s a pickleball player’s paradise

Beyond watching the best players in the world compete at the highest level, MLP events offer plenty of additional experiences that make the tournament more than just a day of matches. Each stop features unique programming and activities for fans, from opportunities like playing padel with Ben Johns to crowd favorites like glow-in-the-dark pickleball — a personal highlight that’s hard to beat.

Each venue also offers a full fan experience beyond the courts, with plenty of food, beverages, and shopping opportunities throughout the event. One of my favorite stops is the Pickleball Central tent, where fans can browse the latest gear, test out new paddles, and pick up merchandise from their favorite teams.

There’s truly nothing like experiencing a live sporting event. The energy, the drama, the high-stakes moments, and the incredible level of play create an atmosphere you simply can’t replicate from home. You’ll leave the venue inspired, fired up, and ready to get back on the court.
