4 things to watch for on Saturday at MLP San Clemente

Edward Jones MLP San Clemente continues on Saturday with eight matches across Championship Court and Grandstand Court at Life Time Rancho San Clemente.

Here is the Order of Play:

Now, let’s get into what to watch for.

  • The Utah Black Diamonds (7-9, 21pts) are coming off a wild comeback victory over the Phoenix Flames. After winning both mixed doubles games to force a DreamBreaker, they got down 4-12 before eventually coming away with a 21-18 triumph. Tyler Loong, who played with a cast on his right hand due to a recent biking injury, came up clutch and went 8-3 against the Flames’ Tyson McGuffin to help Utah ultimately triumph. Utah will face the Los Angeles Mad Drops and Columbus Sliders on Saturday. As of this writing, Loong is in the lineup against Los Angeles, while Yates Johnson is set to take his place against Columbus.

  • Speaking of Los Angeles, the Mad Drops (11-5, 30pts) saw their seven-match winning streak come to an end on Friday against a shorthanded Brooklyn Pickleball Team that had none of its usual starting males available. Hunter Johnson/Quang Duong had an especially tough outing, as they dropped both of their men’s doubles contests against Blaine Hovenier/Ryan Fu and AJ Koller/Rafa Hewett. Those two, along with the rest of the Mad Drops, will look to rebound in their lone match against Utah on Saturday.

  • The Phoenix Flames (3-12, 10pts) and SoCal Hard Eights (2-14, 8pts) will clash on this week’s edition of Saturday Night Pickleball. Despite going 0-2 on Friday, the Hard Eights put together some strong performances, taking the Mad Drops to a DreamBreaker and having leads late in several games against the Columbus Sliders. Blaine Hovenier and co. always bring the energy, which will make Saturday’s final bout against ‘Team Showtime’ a must-watch event.

Grandstand Court action begins at 10am PT, while Championship Court matches will start at 11am PT on Pickleballtv.
