Acevedo, Martinez Vich surge into men’s doubles final over Braham, Faletto

Nico Acevedo and Jaume Martinez Vich closed out Semifinal Saturday at the Veolia Chicago Cup presented by Storm with an 11-9, 12-10 victory over No. 27 seeds Bruno Faletto and Anouar Braham.

Faletto and Braham—who had lost Game 1 in each of their previous three matches—had four opportunities to close out Game 2 and force a decider, but Acevedo and Martinez Vich overcame a 7-10 deficit to seal the deal in straight games.

“It was a hard match because usually we like to play with rhythm and move the ball, but these guys do a lot of speed ups and they have a lot of power, so it was hard to find a rhythm,” Martinez Vich explained afterwards. “At the end I think I took one step forward and started to take more balls out of the air, and that created a little more time for us because I was a little farther back and just losing court.”

This is the second tournament in two weeks that Acevedo and Martinez Vich have played together; after falling in the semifinals last week in Las Vegas, they will have an opportunity to go for gold in Chicago.

They will face top seeds Hayden Patriquin and Federico Staksrud, who beat No. 3 seeds Eric Oncins and CJ Klinger 11-8, 7-11, 11-3 in the other semifinal.

Live broadcast coverage of Carvana Championship Sunday begins at 10am CT on Pickleballtv and Tennis Channel.
