Bouchard heads to Round of 16 with triumph over veteran Tereschenko
SAN CLEMENTE, CA - Twenty-third seed Genie Bouchard's pickleball game is clearly on the rise.
Bouchard, 30, advanced to the Round of 16 in singles at the Select Medical Orange County Cup presented by FitVine Wines with an 11-3, 11-8 victory over 13th-seeded Irina Tereschenko on Wednesday.
The Canadian was all-smiles following the win, of course.
"I'm so happy with how I played. I know Irina's a legend of the game, so I'm really excited to get the win," said Bouchard. "I think it's my first tournament where I've got two wins in a row, so I'm proud of that as well."
Nevertheless, the former Wimbledon finalist is adamant that she must continue to hone her craft after making the transition from tennis to start the calendar year.
"I'm still a long ways away. I know I have to keep training, keep working hard, keep improving. It's definitely a different skill set than tennis, so I'm just still trying to learn and adapt," explained Bouchard. "There are so many great professionals on this pickleball tour, so I learn every day that I'm here."
Bouchard will face World No. 1 Anna Leigh Waters on Thursday.
