Buckner sends Jansen packing in singles with come-from-behind win
SAN CLEMENTE, CA - No. 6 Brooke Buckner couldn't deliver the goods in the opening game of her quarterfinal singles match against No. 3 Lea Jansen on Friday at the Select Medical Orange County Cup presented by FitVine Wines, falling 11-5.
That certainly wasn't the case the rest of the way.
Buckner turned things around with 11-3, 11-3 victories in the second and third stanzas, respectively, to secure a spot in the semi-finals on Saturday against No. 2 Catherine Parenteau.
"It's really challenging [to rally], especially against a veteran player like Lea," said Buckner, a 32-year-old mother of three. "She's had my number in the past. We have good battles. She's so strong, so you just fight for every point, do your best, and see what happens."
Buckner won singles gold at the Veolia LA Open in April with a victory over Lauren Stratman.
