Castillo secures first PPA gold in women’s singles
LAKEWAY, TX - Judit Castillo took home the women’s singles title at the Veolia Austin Open powered by Invited after an 8-11, 11-6 11-7 victory over Kaitlyn Christian.
The match featured two players devoted to two different strategies; Christian came into net often to try and finish points with volleys, while Castillo stayed back more frequently and instead relied on her drives from the baseline.
After a myriad of tense rallies in all three games, the baseline play of Castillo proved to be too much for Christian to handle.
This is the Spaniard’s first PPA gold and her second singles title of the year after also winning the APP Punta Gorda Open in January.
Castillo doesn’t have too much time celebrate as she’s set to play the APP Miami Open later this week, but she still plans to reflect on the accomplishment with her loved ones before her next outing.
“I’m just gonna drive home and spend time with my friends and family for a day, and then it’s time to focus again,” she said.
She’ll be on the lookout for her third singles gold of the year this week in south Florida after her triumph in the Texas capital.
