Hangzhou Wednesday Recap: Massive comeback helps Wei, Garnett reach mixed doubles semifinals

Main draw action at PPA Tour Asia’s Hangzhou Open began Wednesday evening with Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches in all five pro divisions.

There were plenty of noteworthy results and three-game battles, but one of the day’s best matches was Ting Chieh “Jamie” Wei/Connor Garnett’s 5-11, 11-1, 11-9 victory over Jamie Haas/Tama Shimabukuro.

The No. 3 seeds trailed1-7 in the deciding game but stormed back and ended the contest on a 9-2 run to advance to the semifinals.

They will next face top seeds Alix Truong/Federico Staksrud with a spot in the final on the line.

That win was especially important for Garnett, who had lost in the quarterfinals in both men’s singles and men’s doubles (with Blaine Hovenier) earlier in the day.

The singles defeat (4-11, 3-11) came at the hands of Hong kit “Jack” Wong, who is considered to be one of the top singles players out of Asia.

Wong will look to snap a two-match losing streak against Hien Truong in the semifinals.

Staying in the mixed doubles draw, Nok Yiu Tang/Eunggwon Kim outdueled No. 4 seeds Yufei Long/Blaine Hovenier by an 11-9, 4-11, 14-12 score line.

The contest was tight into the late stages of Game 3, but Tang/Kim were eventually able to close it out after saving four match points to set a semifinal clash against No. 2 seeds Chao Yi (Zoey) Wang/Armaan Bhatia.

Live semifinal coverage will be available Thursday evening starting at 8pm ET on Pickleballtv.
