Haworth ousts Garnett, books quarterfinal spot
PHOENIX, AZ - Chris Haworth is on a bit of a hot streak. He struck gold at the APP Punta Gorda Open two weeks ago, and he’s making a similarly strong run this week at the PPA Desert Ridge Open.
Singles day is nowhere near finished, but Haworth has already booked his ticket to the quarterfinals with a win over No. 4 seed Connor Garnett.
He didn’t start out particularly well, getting down 2-9 in the opening game, but he eventually clawed his way back to take that opening game 12-10, thanks to some well-placed drives that allowed to get to the kitchen on his service points.
After dropping the second game, Haworth found his form again to clinch his spot in the final eight with a 12-10, 3-11, 11-4 victory.
Up next for the big man in the quarterfinals is a match against No. 6 seed Jay Devilliers, who put on an impressive display himself to defeat Marcel Chan in straight games in the Round of 16.
