Haworth takes men’s singles title, top ranking as Waters, Johns claim mixed crown with wild third game
Carvana Championship Sunday at the Greater Zion Cup at Black Desert Resort began with the mixed doubles and men’s singles finals, which were won by Anna Leigh Waters/Ben Johns and Chris Haworth, respectively.
Waters/Johns defeated No. 3 seeds Anna Bright/Hayden Patriquin 11-5, 11-0, 15-13 in a match that saw the top seeds demonstrate their dominance with a 25-0 run from 5-5 in Game 1 to 8-0 in Game 3.
From there, though, Bright/Patriquin tuned things around to deliver one of the most entertaining games in the history of the PPA Tour; they saved eight match points to tie the score at 13-13 before Waters/Johns at last converted their ninth championship point opportunity.
“Nine championship points is a lot. You’d hope to get it in the first few, but it’s better than going to Game 4,” Johns said of the ending sequence. “It may have taken a while, but at least we got there.”
“That’s the beauty of racket sports,” Bright noted in her runner-up interview. “It’s never over till it’s over. There’s not a clock to run out, so Hayden and I just kept telling ourselves to keep fighting. We put ourselves in a position to push it to four and unfortunately didn’t get it done, but it was a great match by Ben and AL and fun to be a part of.”
In the men’s singles final, Chris Haworth avenged his Texas Open loss to Federico Staksrud with an 11-9, 11-5 victory to secure his sixth career PPA Tour title.
Sunday’s clash was a meaningful one for both players since the winner would overtake Hunter Johnson for the top spot in the PPA men’s singles rankings.
That ranking now belongs to Haworth, who only began competing full-time on the PPA Tour in August.
“I feel super blessed to be able to play this sport and play in front of incredible fans. It’s just amazing,” he said afterwards. “I came in with not a ton of expectations. I knew I could play at a great level, but everyone out here is really good. I just tried to out my head down, work hard every day, and here I am.”
