Humberg, Klinger shock McGuffin, Glozman to reach Round of 16
OVERLAND PARK, KS - Mari Humberg and CJ Klinger are into the mixed doubles Round of 16 after a 6-11, 13-11, 11-5 upset victory over No. 9 seeds Vivian Glozman and Tyson McGuffin.
It was an immensely impressive display from the No. 42 seeds, who were playing a reverse stack with Humberg on the left and Klinger on the right.
That allowed the lefty Klinger to take his forehands in the middle and Humberg—who has the best one-handed backhand in the women’s game—to duel with McGuffin on crosscourt dinks.
The match gave fans on Humana Championship Court hands battle after hands battle, with the 18-year-old Klinger showcasing his hand speed time and again on he and Humberg's way to an eventual triumph.
The tandem will next face No. 6 seeds Etta Wright and Christian Alshon with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
