Hunter Johnson celebrates Brisbane gold with ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!’ chant

Top seed Hunter Johnson couldn’t have scripted a better ending to his WALKER Australia Pickleball Cup experience on Championship Sunday in Brisbane.

He secured the men’s singles crown with a hard-fought 11-8, 5-11, 11-8 victory over third-seeded Christian Alshon in the tournament’s final match at Pat Rafter Arena.

Johnson pumped his fist and leaped for joy when the triumph was finally secured, and for good reason. After building a commanding 7-0 lead in the third game, he watched Alshon storm back, take an 8-7 advantage, and threaten to steal the deciding stanza.

But Johnson, channeling the combative spirit of an Australian tennis legend, wasn’t about to let the international PPA title slip through his fingers.

"Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! I've always wanted to do that. Thank you guys so much. You guys really kept me alive there. This is one of the best crowds I've ever played in front of," praised Johnson. "I was trying to bring my inner Lleyton Hewitt out. You guys saw that. It was super fun. I'm definitely coming back to Australia."

Johnson clearly relished his time Down Under, making his stay all the more special by finishing on a high note.

"First time in Australia. Glad to get the title. Just had some amazing food, some amazing hospitality. The fans, the people here, the culture is amazing. You guys have a great lifestyle here, so I could definitely see myself living here three months out of the year," he added. "I don't know, maybe you guys would welcome me as a fellow Aus."
