Hunter Johnson disqualified for paddle toss that struck fan
No. 3 seed Hunter Johnson was disqualified during his men’s singles quarterfinals match against No. 12 seed Zane Ford on Friday afternoon in Sacramento.
Late in the third game, Johnson was walking toward his bench when he tossed his paddle at his bag, but it accidentally struck a nearby spectator, resulting in a forfeit that ultimately ended the contest at Life Time Arden.
Ford automatically advanced to the semifinals against No. 6 Jack Sock.
It actually wasn't the only paddle toss that made headlines on Friday.
After falling to No. 2 seed Kaitlyn Christian in three games in the women's singles quarterfinals, No. 7 seed Isabella Dunlap flung her paddle into the fence in frustration before approaching the net to congratulate her opponent.
Both matches took place on Grandstand Court.
